Presbycusis is the aging of the bilateral and symmetrical auditory system
more or less pronounced depending on the individual. For people aged 50 or over it progresses slowly and represents the most common cause of deafness in the elderly.
Presbycusis is hearing loss that begins especially with high frequencies; i.e. Women's and children's voices which are the most used to understand the social impact of deafness.
Presbycusis
There are several factors that aggravate or precipitate hearing loss.
Prolonged exposure to noise.
Pathological factors, diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke, hypothyroidism, alcohol, tobacco.
Iatrogenic factors, certain medications (ototoxicity) can cause hearing loss (aspirin, certain antibiotics, certain anticancer).
Genetic factors. Two ways: some genetic factors directly affect the occurrence of presbycusis and others the intermediary of greater sensibility
to enviromental factors.
Signs and symptoms.
Many of us do not notice the first signs of hearing loss because we adapt to change.
What is important is to recognize the most common signs that indicate hearing loss.
If you experience any of the following symptoms have your hearing checked by an ear specialist:
If you feel that people speak more softly or that they mumble.
You turn up the volume of the radio or television more than usual.
You hear people talking but you have difficulty understanding certain words or phrases.
You frequently ask people to repeat.Your family or people around you suggest that your hearing is bad.
You have trouble understanding lectures or plays at the theatre.
You understand male voices better than female ones.
You have tinnitus (noise in the ears).
Your aural comprehension is altered when in a noisy environment (restaurants, shops. . .)
You no longer tolerate loud noises.
Your understanding of foreign languages is reduced.
It is very important to consul as soon as these signs appear otherwise deafness in an elderly person can go as far as reducing communication and even social withdrawal and isolation. If it gets to that stage it is difficult to find solutions to the problem.
